Paintings inspired by the sea, sky and shorelines
I was born and educated on the Isle of Wight at Carisbrooke Grammar school. After A Levels I studied sculpture and ceramics at Bath Academy of Art and Hammersmith College of Art. I then completed a post graduate teaching course at Bognor Regis College of Education. I returned to the Island where I taught art and design at Ventnor Secondary, then Cowes High, Medina High and finally was Head of Art and Design at Ryde High school. I took early retirement in 1996.
After retiring, I set up my own studio at home and began selling my ceramic work through local and mainland galleries including the Channel Islands.
In 2005 we moved to the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall. It was a lovely change of scenery and inspiration for a while, but in 2008 we decided that the Island was really where we belong, and moved back, returning once more to our beloved Ventnor. And in 2011 we moved to our present home, an old coach house in Wroxall.
I stopped making ceramics some years ago and began painting again, mainly working with acrylic on canvas and board. This year, after three years where treatment for ovarian cancer meant I was unable to work at all, I was finally well enough to get back to the easel and have been producing watercolours and mixed media paintings.
All the work I make is inspired by the sea, sky, and shorelines of the Island, using the natural colours and rhythms of the environment that has been so important a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
Recently I became interested again in the processes of bookbinding, having learned the skills many years ago, and have been crafting sketch and scrap books from recycled cartridge paper. The results can be viewed in the Handmade Books section.
